Governor Mills declared a state of emergency January 11, 2024 for Maine coastal counties after impacts of the recent storm.

This state of emergency triggers the emergency wage levels for the City of Portland as per a referendum passed in 2020. The minimum wage is now raised to $22.50 per hour and $11.25 per hour for tipped employees working within the City of Portland. This does not apply to employees working remotely from home.

The emergency wage levels will remain in effect until Governor Mills ends the state of emergency. Employers should immediately adjust wages as needed for compliance.

See the City of Portland news release for additional information.
