At a time when GenAI (generative AI) and remote work have coalesced to transform how businesses operate, it can be easy to forget the value of face-to-face connection. Sure, technology has brought us undeniable efficiencies, and it only tends to move in one direction, i.e. forward, but I fear that what we gain in speed can sometimes be offset by a loss of deep thinking, complex understanding and connection.
Last month, the KMA team came together for one of our biannual-ish offsite meetings. As a business that has since day one operated via a hybrid team, these gatherings involve time, travel, and no small investment, but the magic that happens when we’re all in one room is truly priceless. Together we learned new material, brainstormed, solved problems, and shared experiences, all the while reinforcing the bonds that make our team and our work what we call KMA-zing.
There’s something powerful about being able to read a colleague’s body language, to share a spontaneous idea over lunch, or to engage in group work in fresh, innovative ways that bring the entire room to stitches of laughter. These moments remind me that human connection is at the heart of quality consulting, teamwork, and our culture.
While GenAI and other technologies have revolutionized how we access information, they can never replace the depth, empathy, and nuance that come from a career spent working with real people. AI can offer instant answers, but those answers may be incomplete or entirely inaccurate (hello, hallucinations), they may lack context, or miss key underlying dynamics. It’s the gulf between language and understanding.
I like to put it this way: HR’s obligation is navigating highly sensitive situations, interpreting subtle cues, and guiding organizations through change and decision-making with empathy and insight. This is where KMA shines. Our consultants bring a level of professionalism and lived experience that goes far beyond the reach of any algorithm. We don’t regurgitate information – we build relationships. We understand people, and we find meaning in patterns and trends. Whether we’re advising on a compliance issue, helping to identify and repair the subtle cracks in a team’s culture, or facilitating a candidate as they navigate a complex hiring process, our human-centered approach means that every interaction is thoughtful and deeply supportive.
As we embrace the tools of the future, our philosophy at KMA is never to underestimate our humanity, nor the timeless value of being present – with our clients, our external partners, and of course with each other.
If you’re facing a challenge that calls for thoughtful, human-centered HR, recruiting or compensation support, please reach out. We’re here to listen, guide, and help you move forward.
From all of us at KMA, we wish you a joyful, restful Thanksgiving holiday filled with gratifying moments and the people who matter most.
